Indonesian telco Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison enhances 5G coverage and implements green tech for G20 Summit

Indonesian digital telecommunications firm Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) bolstered its 5G offerings and implemented sustainability initiatives ahead of the Indonesian G20 Presidency Summit, which happened on 15 and 16 November in Nusa Dua, Bali.
 

To enhance seamless connectivity for G20 delegates, IOH launched a special Travel On tourist card which allows for domestic and international calls to 39 countries at a small cost of 1 rupiah per second. The telco also offered enhanced 5G international roaming services to cover 13 G20 member countries.
 

Additionally, it worked with key G20 venues including the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Apurva Kempinski Bali, Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, and Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center to ensure full 5G coverage in these locations.

Green 5G technology with Huawei

Huawei Indonesia supported IOH in making further advancements in 5G connectivity through their advanced 3.5 GHz All-in-One module. This module can deliver over two GB/s of capacity with a Massive MIMO 64T64R antenna. The overall solution will help to reduce the space needed to install equipment on site, simplifying its deployment in telecommunications towers, reducing rental costs, and shortening time to market by 60 per cent. It can also improve 5G coverage by 30 per cent.
 

The module enables site simplification with one embedded active and passive antenna, combined with the dual band radio module 5516 – a more environmentally-friendly solution  than traditional single band radio modules.
 

“We have tested their technology for the first time in the IOH network and successfully reduced electricity consumption by up to 25 per cent, which will positively impact environmental preservation,” said Vikram Sinha, President Director and CEO of IOH. “This is one of our efforts to provide a world-class digital experience to support the presidential G20 summit in Bali that has sustainable impacts on the world.”

Marine conservation efforts

Another initiative carried out by IOH to support environmental conservation and in line with one of the G20 agenda is the inauguration of a marine conservation programme in Jembrana. Coined the Sampah Jadi Pulsa programme, it supports the recycling chain of used-plastic bottles, and empowers local micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and fishermen in Kuta Mandalika.
